4 Creative Math Review Packet Activities
Think there is only one way to use a middle school math review packet? Think again! Although using a review packet as a set of math worksheets or math homework problems can be useful, let’s look at several creative ways we can use these problems in the middle school math classroom.
(1) Math Homework
Alright, I had to start with the obvious. These review packets are super convenient to print, staple, and assign to students as review. Ultimately, this is probably the easiest and most common way to use a review packet. If you need a fresh set of review problems for students, I do have a huge range of review packets for 5th grade math, 6th grade math, 7th grade math, and 8th grade math. All include a printed and digital Google slides copy! Now, let’s get on to a few more creative ways to use these problems!
(2) Teach the Group
There are two different ways you could set up this activity. One option is to split students into groups of 4-5. Each student in the group works on a specific part of the review packet. For example, student A completes problems 1-5, student B completes problems 6-10, etc. Once each group member is finished with their set, they take turns “teaching” their set of problems to the rest of the group.
This could also be adapted to be a whole class activity. Break the class into 4-5 groups and assign each group a section of the review packet that they will teach to the rest of the class!
(3) Get Students Moving
Review packets are essentially a bank of problems. If you want to get creative with how you use them, pick out several of the problems that you feel are especially good review. Post them around the room and have students rotate to the different problems. Personally, I like give students a Post-it note for each problem that they complete their work on. At the end, you can have them go around and stick their Post-it notes next to each problem.
(4) Think, Check, and Share
With some of the problems, especially the ones you feel are essential, this can be a great conversations starter between students and the class. Have students complete the problem (or get out the completed review packet). Then, have them check that answer with a partner near them and discuss how they got their answer. Then have volunteers share out to the class.
However you decide to use math review packets in the classroom, they can be a useful tool that help students review important concepts throughout the school year. Don’t forget to grab the packets that you need for your specific middle school math grade level.
